Still in hospital and fed up with waiting for Alfie to return, Kat is eager to return to The Vic to see her baby son. Frustrated, she detaches herself from the drip and attempts to make her way out of the building. Although she is caught, the nurse reluctantly lets Kat go after dressing her wound. Back at The Vic, Ronnie stands alone by Tommy's cot while the familiar tune of 'Auld Lang Syne' roars from the pub below. Alfie returns to the pub to collect baby Tommy, but he is distracted by the festivities downstairs. Charlie, who is supposed to be looking after Tommy, is also distracted by the party and is getting drunker by the second. Minutes later, a dazed Ronnie makes her way back through the crowd and heads out of The Vic, clutching baby Tommy to her chest. Back at home, Ronnie lays the baby gently in the cot. She then starts to shake, spiralling through the worst despair imaginable.
Roxy finds her way into Jack and Ronnie's flat after the front door is left open and soon sobers up when Ronnie begins to cry uncontrollably. Christian arrives hot on the heels of Roxy and manages to drag her away by revealing his infidelity, leaving Ronnie alone. Slowly coming to terms with what she has done, Ronnie shakes as she tells Tommy he is going back home. After wrapping the baby in a blanket, Ronnie freezes as lights from an ambulance parking outside The Vic flood the room. Ronnie quickly heads out of the front door and sees Kat stepping out of a cab. Just as Ronnie is about to run after her, she is stopped by Jack who has returned from his trip away.
On entering The Vic, Kat is bemused to find the crowded pub silent and when the partygoers avoid eye contact, she makes her way upstairs. However, Kat's excitement drains as she discovers why Alfie, her family and paramedics are surrounding Tommy's cot. Tragedy and heartbreak fill the air and Kat's eyes meet Alfie's as he stands holding what they believe is their dead son. Across the Square, Ronnie struggles to tell Jack the truth as he meets 'James' for the first time. And as she witnesses his pure and unadulterated love for him, Ronnie freezes in horror as Kat's desperate screams erupt through the night…
Elsewhere, Carol asks Connor to leave the house but they end up falling into each other's arms again; Mercy pushes Kim over when Kim tries her luck with Fatboy; and Jodie manages to persuade Darren to propose to her.
